Monely vs YNAB: Which Budgeting App to Choose?

Monely vs YNAB: Which Budgeting App to Choose?
In this article

Monely and YNAB (You Need A Budget) start from the same question and land on different answers. YNAB organizes money into categories and asks you to assign every unit to one of them before you spend it. Monely organizes money against your income and lets entries arrive as a WhatsApp message, with text, audio, or a photo of the receipt.

Every YNAB figure in this comparison was checked on 11 August 2026, and the accepted file formats on 12 August 2026, against official sources: the pricing page, the features page, the help center at support.ynab.com, and the app’s App Store listing. Where the official source states no number, no number appears here.

What Monely Does

Before the comparison, an inventory of what is in the app today:

  • WhatsApp AI assistant: log by text, voice message, or a photo of the receipt
  • OCR receipt reading, powered by Google Gemini
  • Shared expense groups, for couples and families
  • Expense splitting in proportion to each person’s income
  • 8 languages and 155 currencies plus Bitcoin: market rates for the Brazilian real, the euro, and Bitcoin, and the European Central Bank daily reference for the rest
  • No advertisements on any plan, including the free one
  • Direct import from five apps: Wallet, Minhas Financas, Money Manager, Bluecoins, and Splital, plus bank statements in OFX and QFX and spreadsheets in CSV, TSV, XLS, and XLSX
  • Saving and investing goals with a progress bar
  • Recurring transactions with a due-date reminder or automatic confirmation
  • Default and custom categories, with labels and transaction templates
  • Cloud backup and sync across devices, on every plan
  • Material 3 design, with dark and light mode
  • Credit card limit and bank overdraft limit, so the available balance reflects what is really there
  • Accessibility: screen reader support, dark mode, a color-blind friendly palette, and sufficient contrast

How Each App Records an Expense

The YNAB features page, checked on 11 August 2026, describes securely linking accounts and importing transactions automatically, plus file import documented in the help center, which lists QFX, OFX, QIF, and CSV and presents QFX and OFX as the recommended formats (checked on 12 August 2026). Bank coverage, per that same help center, reaches the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and selected European banks; on the pages we read we found no confirmation of coverage in Latin America, Asia, or Africa.

In Monely the main path is different: you send a WhatsApp message and the entry lands. It can be text (“lunch 12”), it can be a voice note, it can be a photo of the receipt, which the OCR reads. We found no mention of WhatsApp in any official YNAB source in our checks on 11 August 2026. One honest caveat: that flow runs through WhatsApp and is not end-to-end encrypted. Monely’s Privacy Policy describes encryption in transit and at rest.

Two Product Decisions Worth Explaining

Not every absence is a feature running late. These two are choices, and each has its own replacement.

Logging Is Manual Because the Method Depends on It

An app that only pulls data from your bank mirrors what the bank already shows. It repeats, on a prettier screen, the same statement list, and looking at a finished list does not change behavior, because you had no part in making it. The act of logging is what turns data into awareness. The argument comes from Chapter 3 of Cinco Minutos por Dia, the book by Monely’s founder, in the section on why logging by hand is a remedy rather than a defect.

There is a distinction that resolves the apparent WhatsApp paradox. Awareness comes from the act; the friction of many taps just to record something is a different thing, and it is what makes people quit in week two. The right tool preserves the act and cuts the friction. That is exactly what message-based logging does: you still decide to record, but you do not have to open the app, hunt for the category, and confirm three screens.

The Target Is About Your Income, Not About a Category

Category caps are laborious to maintain and almost nobody sustains them for many months. Monely meets the same need on another road:

  • Income targets: you set what share of the month’s income goes to investing, to shared expenses, and to personal spending.
  • Necessary and Desirable: personal spending splits into what you need and what you want, with a target percentage for each side. Those are the actual labels in the interface.
  • The classification comes from the subcategory, set once. Every entry inherits it. There is no decision to make at each transaction, which is precisely where category caps die in practice.
  • Investment objectives: a goal with a target amount, tied to an account, with a progress bar.

The question from the book sums the method up: “do I need this, or do I merely want it?”

Worth saying plainly: YNAB is the best existing implementation of the opposite road. If the category envelope is your method, there is no reason to switch.

Languages, Currencies, and Reach

Currencies155 plus Bitcoin, with conversionOne currency per plan; for several currencies the official guide says to create separate plans
Bank connectionNone, by product decisionUnited States, Canada, United Kingdom, and selected European banks

This is where the gap is widest. YNAB’s official multi-currency guide, checked on 11 August 2026, explains that every account in a plan must share one currency and recommends one plan per currency for people living between countries. Monely converts across 155 currencies plus Bitcoin inside the same app.

Pricing, With Source and Date

Competitor pricing ages fast, so here is what can be verified and how.

YNAB figures per ynab.com/pricing, checked on 11 August 2026, plus tax where applicable. The same page states that the subscription can be shared with up to six people and that college students get 365 free days with proof of enrollment. Monely store prices vary by country.

When to Choose YNAB

There are cases where the honest answer is the other app.

  1. The envelope method is what works for you. YNAB’s four rules, published in the help center, begin by giving every unit of money a job before you spend it. The whole app is built around that, with category targets and reassignment when the month turns. Monely has no category cap and will not warn you that you blew past the grocery line.
  2. You want transactions to arrive on their own and you live where coverage exists. If your accounts are in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or a supported European bank, YNAB’s bank connection removes daily logging. Monely has no bank connection and will not get one.
  3. You are a larger group sharing one subscription. The YNAB pricing page states up to six people on a single subscription.
  4. You want to log from your watch. The App Store listing shows compatibility with watchOS 8.0 or later. Monely has no watch app.
  5. You are a college student. YNAB offers 365 free days with proof of enrollment, per its own pricing page.

When to Choose Monely

  1. You do not read in English. YNAB’s App Store listing shows English only. Monely runs in 8 languages, interface and WhatsApp assistant included.
  2. You deal in more than one currency. 155 currencies plus Bitcoin in the same app, with conversion. In YNAB, each currency needs its own plan.
  3. You want to log by message. Text, voice, or a receipt photo on WhatsApp, without opening the app.
  4. You split bills on unequal incomes. Shared groups calculate each person’s contribution from each person’s income instead of halving everything.
  5. You are leaving another app. Five direct importers, plus spreadsheets and statements across six file formats.

Migrating

There is no direct YNAB importer in Monely, and there is no point inventing a path that does not exist. What does exist:

  1. In YNAB, export your plan data from the web version
  2. Convert the file into one of the accepted formats: .csv, .tsv, .xls, .xlsx, .ofx, or .qfx
  3. In Monely, go to Settings, Import data, and choose spreadsheet import
  4. Review the preview before confirming

The five apps with a direct importer are Wallet, Minhas Financas, Money Manager, Bluecoins, and Splital.

Conclusion

YNAB is the best existing implementation of one specific method: giving every unit of money a job inside categories, with bank connections in the regions it covers, sharing with up to six people, and a body of teaching around its four rules. Anyone already thriving on that method has nothing to gain by switching.

Monely bets on something else: logging as an act, done by WhatsApp message, and a target measured against the month’s income rather than a cap per category. Add 8 languages, 155 currencies plus Bitcoin, groups that split in proportion to income, five direct importers, and no ads on any plan.

Every YNAB figure in this text was checked on 11 August 2026, and the accepted file formats on 12 August 2026, against the official sources cited throughout. Prices and features change. If you are reading this long after that date, check the source before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

Monely or YNAB, which should I choose?

It depends on the method you want to follow. YNAB is built entirely around assigning every unit of money to a category before you spend it, and no app does that better. Monely works with targets set against the month's income and with the Necessary and Desirable split inherited from the subcategory, and logging happens by WhatsApp message, with text, audio, or a photo of the receipt. YNAB figures checked on ynab.com and on the App Store listing on 11 August 2026.

How much does YNAB cost?

The official pricing page, checked on 11 August 2026, states $14.99 per month or $109 per year, plus tax where applicable, with a 34-day free trial and no credit card required. The same page says the subscription can be shared with up to six people. Monely PRO costs about $2.99 per month or about $29.99 per year.

Does YNAB support WhatsApp logging?

We found no mention of WhatsApp on the YNAB features page or on the App Store listing, both checked on 11 August 2026. In Monely, WhatsApp logging accepts text, audio, and receipt photos. That flow runs through WhatsApp and is not end-to-end encrypted: Monely's Privacy Policy describes encryption in transit and at rest.

Does Monely have bank sync?

No, and that is a product decision, not a gap. Logging in Monely happens by WhatsApp, receipt photo, by hand, or by importing a file. YNAB does have bank connections: the features page, checked on 11 August 2026, describes linking accounts and importing transactions automatically, and the help center points to coverage in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and selected European banks.

Does Monely have spending caps per category?

No, by choice. Monely solves the same need another way: income targets, which set what share of the month goes to investing, to shared expenses, and to personal spending; and the Necessary and Desirable split, which comes from the subcategory and asks for no decision at each entry. If the category envelope is your method, YNAB is the app built for it.

Is YNAB available in other languages?

The YNAB App Store listing, checked on 11 August 2026, shows English only in the languages field. Monely is available in 8 languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Indonesian, Turkish, and Hindi.

Can I mix currencies in YNAB?

Not inside the same plan. The official multi-currency guide, checked on 11 August 2026, tells you to create a separate plan for each currency, because every account in a plan must share one currency. Monely runs on 155 currencies plus Bitcoin and converts between them.

Can I migrate from YNAB to Monely?

There is no direct YNAB importer in Monely. The five direct importers are Wallet, Minhas Financas, Money Manager, Bluecoins, and Splital. If you export your transactions into one of the accepted formats, file import handles it: spreadsheets in .csv, .tsv, .xls, and .xlsx, and statements in .ofx and .qfx.
